Vigil-Agrimis, Inc. receives second SBA Minority Small Business award
PORTLAND, OR 10/3/07 - The Small Business Administration presented Portland-based environmental design firm Vigil-Agrimis, Inc. with the 2007 award for Minority Small Business of the Year at its luncheon event on October 3. This is the firm’s second SBA Minority Business Award.
“In many ways receiving this award is more satisfying than a similar award we received five years ago,” Vigil says. “I am proud that we have been able to remain vital and manage the many challenges that newer businesses must meet to survive. We are prospering in a challenging business climate while staying true to our company mission of providing professional services that help to maintain and restore the environment.”
When Ken Vigil and Paul Agrimis founded their company nine years ago, they knew they wanted their focus to be on protecting and restoring the environment. Today, Vigil-Agrimis, Inc. is proud to be known as a company of green engineers, landscape architects, and environmental scientists working to fulfill that mission.
Some of the company’s recent projects include restoring a half mile section of Johnson Creek at Tideman Johnson Park, completing a new culvert and stream restoration project on Wolfe Creek near Tillamook to improve fish passage conditions for coastal salmon, designing habitat improvements at the confluence of Stephens Creek with the Willamette River, and environmental impact statements for airport improvement projects in Juneau and Kodiak, Alaska.
Vigil, the company’s president, is an environmental engineer who specializes in water pollution control, hydrology and hydraulics, stormwater management, and stream restoration design. He is the author of “Clean Water, an Introduction to Water Quality and Water Pollution Control” published by Oregon State University Press.
Agrimis, the firm’s vice president, is a landscape architect, wetland scientist, and civil engineer. He is one of the region’s leading professionals in wetlands management and stream restoration. He serves on the board of directors for The Wetlands Conservancy.

Vigil-Agrimis, Inc. awards scholarship, internship to Aloha High School student
PORTLAND, OR 7/26/07 - Vigil-Agrimis, Inc. would like to congratulate Juan Cervantes, winner of the company’s Annual Engineering and Environmental Science Scholarship for first-year Hispanic college students.
“We have found that people of Hispanic ancestry are under-represented in the fields of engineering, math and science,” says firm President Ken Vigil, PE. “We would like to provide financial assistance and mentorship to help these young people achieve their goals, to succeed in college and become working professionals.”
Cervantes, who graduated from Aloha High School in June, will be studying applied mathematics at Lewis & Clark College this fall. He carries a 3.9 cumulative GPA and volunteers as a math tutor.
“My dream is to become a bilingual mathematics teacher,” Cervantes says. “I do not want other bright students to be limited by the language they speak, so I will help those students that aspire for more to reach their dreams.”
In addition to a $1,000 cash award, Cervantes is serving a summer internship with VAI. “When I met Ken at the office and he wasn’t in a suit and tie, I knew this was going to be a different kind of work place,” he says.
The biggest surprise for Cervantes was finding out how much he enjoys field survey work. Highlights have included a jaunt around Clark County to evaluate bridge scour, and a long day out at Metro’s Cooper Mountain Nature Park site. “I got stung on the lip by a bee, but also found out I wasn’t allergic to poison oak,” he says. “So far, it’s been a great summer.”
Past winners of the scholarship, awarded through the Portland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as part of their annual “Investing in Oregon’s Future” campaign, include Edgar Rodriguez (2006), a Tigard High School student pursuing an engineering degree and Dimas Alfaro (2005), an engineering student from Hillsboro High School.

A tree grows through it: new green street makes way for natural beauty
PORTLAND, OR 5/2/07 - What happens when a tree is in the way of a new road? Usually, the tree doesn’t stand a chance; but as developers and engineers adopt greener practices, that rule may be changing.
A big-leaf maple with a 72-inch trunk is at the center of an innovative green street project crafted by engineer Adam Zucker of Vigil-Agrimis, Inc., a Portland-based environmental firm with a penchant for green design. “Traditionally, a roadway has a standard alignment and most everything else is an afterthought,” Zucker says. “In this case, the basis of our design was to preserve the tree. The roadway had nowhere else to go but around it.”
Anticipating the City of Portland’s green streets initiative by a half a year, the roadway includes numerous other sustainable features. New paved surfaces were kept to a minimum by using shared driveway approaches. Stormwater from the roadway and sidewalks runs off into bioswales, attractive landscape features that naturally filter out pollutants. Because the bioswales also absorb the stormwater, the roadway does not discharge any runoff to the City's overtaxed sewer system.
The roadway and its unique tree feature are part of a new residential housing project planned by Old World Development, LLC, in Portland along NE Ainsworth Street and NE 45th Avenue.
